Labor Day weekend is quickly approaching and what better place to spend your three-day weekend than historic Buffalo, Wyoming. With its beautiful, endless scenery and historic attractions, it is the perfect place to relax and unwind with family and friends. Here are a few things you can do while you are there!
First things first, let’s talk about the food. Buffalo has a variety of great options for all taste buds. If you are in the mood for a great steak, there is no better place than Winchester Steak House. From Prime Rib to the famous Winchester Steak (topped with onions, mushrooms and provolone cheese), there is no wonder why this is the premier steakhouse in Buffalo. If you are looking for something lighter for lunch, Sagewood Gifts & Cafe is where you need to go. They offer homemade soups, salads and sandwiches. And once you are done eating, hop on over to their gift store for anything from spices and kitchen accessories to unique gifts for all ages.
You will want to make sure you leave time to take a stroll along Buffalo’s Main Street. Many historic personalities have walked the streets, from Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid to Calamity Jane and even Teddy Roosevelt. Today, the Main Street buildings (some of which date back to 1804) are filled with local shops and restaurants. It is also home to the historic Occidental Hotel, which takes you straight back to the Old West with its embossed ceilings and original back bar in the Saloon, all of which are beautifully restored. And, if you look close enough, you can still find bullet holes in the saloon walls!
If a lake is what you are after for Labor Day Weekend, you are in luck! Lake de Smet, one of the Wonders of Wyoming, is at 16 minute drive from Buffalo. It’s sparkling waters are surrounded by hills, making it a quiet place to boat, fish or camp. Although you might want to sleep with one eye open because legend has said there is a dinosaur-like monster living under the waters who goes by “Smetty”. He is believed to rise above the waters from time-to-time.
And lastly, for those outdoor adventurers, the Big Horn Mountains offer a multitude of activities such as hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding and more! Consisting of more than 900,000 acres of mountains, meadows and forests, it makes for the perfect place to explore. If you prefer to do your exploring within the confines of your vehicle, the Bighorn Scenic Byway includes 45 miles of scenic mountain driving from the city of Sheridan to Greybull. There are options for RV camping throughout the mountains, including a few different KOA campgrounds.
Although that is all we are going to cover today, there is so much to do in the area waiting for you to explore! Whether you plan to spend your Labor Day in Buffalo or anywhere else in our beautiful state of Wyoming, we wish you a safe and happy weekend.
