How to Tow Like a Pro

    Tips for Towing

So you just went out and bought your brand new travel trailer, ready to experience the wonders of RV camping. But is your vehicle ready to tow it? If you have questions about towing your RV, you have come to the right place!

In this post we will try to give you some pro tips on how to properly tow your vehicle and make sure you arrive at your destination safely!

Tip #1 - Find Level Ground

When hooking your RV to your towing vehicle, you need to be on a level surface, preferably an asphalt one. It might take you a couple tries to get the hitch attached, so you don't want your RV to fly away if you fail to get the hitch right the first time.

It might be a hard sell getting people to believe your RV ran away from you before you even got the hitch on!

Tip #2 - Check Your Lights and Tires

Checking both vehicles for both of these things is very important. When checking lights be sure to have someone check your brake lights, turn signals and marker lights. For the tires, make sure they are properly inflated and aren't running thin on tread. You are taking care of two vehicles when you purchase an RV, and if one goes, the other can go as well.

Tip # 3 - Secure Items in RV

Since it is illegal to ride in a vehicle that is being towed, you will need to secure your load inside the RV. If you are traveling long distances with your trailer, items can shift and do damage if they are not secured. Tie down all cabinets and areas of your RV that might swing open or fly out if you go over a large bump. The more items you secure, the less likely your RV is to have any damage done to it on bumpy trips!

Tip # 4 - Be Alert and Drive Smart

One of the most important things to remember when towing is that you could cause severe damage to a lot of things if you aren't careful. Always double check when switching lanes, be extra cautious going down hills and remember to be easy on the brakes. Always having another person that can give you an extra set of eyes is advantageous to new and even veteran drivers. If you make sure you are driving safe, you will most likely get to your destination safely and in reasonable time!

    Tip # 5 - Practice!

The first thing you should do when you buy your new trailers is to take it to an open parking lot and set up a little road course with cones. Once the course is set up, try turning, braking and other techniques to get a feeling for how your vehicle will respond. Feeling uncomfortable while driving an RV is not how you want to start, so practice!
